• The Forgotten Americans: Why Did U.S. Media Ignore U.S. Virgin Islands Devastated by Irma?

https://democracynow.org - Hurricane Irma made landfall in the U.S. Virgin Islands as a Category 5 storm just over one week ago, knocking out electricity and running water, and cutting off communications with the outside world. Now, Governor Kenneth Mapp says the islands of Saint John and Saint Thomas are still nearly entirely without power. The hurricane also destroyed schools and the main hospital on Saint Thomas. The devastation was so extensive, it can be seen from space. Earlier this week, a U.S. military amphibious ship arrived on Saint Thomas ladened with equipment and supplies. The islands have also received emergency aid from residents of the nearby island of Puerto Rico, where volunteers banded together to collect supplies and transport them on dozens of ships. But while Hurrican...

  • Irma Leaves U.S. Virgin Islands Residents With Close To Nothing (HBO)

Seven days after Hurricane Irma devastated two of the three major U.S. Virgin Islands, access to communication lines and critical supplies remain spotty and residents across the islands’ do not know how long recovery will take or what it will cost. The U.S. Virgin Islands are typically thought of as lush tourist getaways in the Caribbean. But the hills have turned brown. Many of the islands’ approximately 100,000 residents, who are American citizens on American soil, insist that the Category 5 storm was unlike anything they’ve weathered before. Irma is responsible for at least 38 confirmed deaths across the Caribbean, four of them in the US territories. The storm’s 185 mile-per-hour winds and water stripped away the entirety of St. John and St. Thomas of plant life and, according to USVI ...

The ONLY WAY to experience the Caribbean is by water. We recently enjoyed a week-long sailing trip through the British Virgin Islands, aboard a 52-foot catamaran captained by Active Cruising. Exercise and healthy smoothies were provided by the ladies of The Kale Whale. We weren't sure what to expect during the trip, as this was our first sailing adventure, but it truly was a once-in-a-lifetime experience. Our backyard was different every day as we sailed from bay to bay, island to island. We woke up to tarpon feeding below the boat, rainbows after a winter sprinkle, epic sunrises, and beautiful clear blue water surrounding us everywhere we traveled. The daily exercises and healthy smoothies kept us energized through the day as we explored, and we were sure to indulge in local delicacie...

https://democracynow.org - Hurricane Irma made landfall in the U.S. The islands have also received emergency aid from residents of the nearby island of Puerto Rico, where volunteers banded together to collect supplies and transport them on dozens of ships. But while Hurricane Irma hit the U.S. Virgin Islands days before it made landfall on the Florida Keys, the Virgin Islands have been largely forgotten in the wall-to-wall U.S. media coverage of the storm. And that omission is even more striking given that the U.S. Virgin Islands are in the midst of celebrating their centennial as U.S. territory. We speak with Saint Thomas native Tiphanie Yanique, award-winning poet and novelist. She’s an associate professor in the English Department at Wesleyan University and the author of the poetry collection "Wife" and the novel "Land of Love and Drowning." Seven days after Hurricane Irma devastated two of the three major U.S. Thomas of plant life and, according to USVI Governor Kenneth Mapp, left well over fifty percent of properties destroyed. Vice NewsAntonia Hylton spent time with residents who have almost nothing left. The daily exercises and healthy smoothies kept us energized through the day as we explored, and we were sure to indulge in local delicacies and plenty of rum after the activities :) We experienced Tortola, The Indians, Norman Bay, Trellis Bay, Anegada, Virgin Gorda and more. If you're the adventurous type who likes to "go with the flow" and let the wind guide you, you will surely enjoy this type of travel. _________________________________________________ This was shot with Phantom 4 drone, Nikon D610, and GoPro Hero. The Climate & Health U.S. Virgin Islands Media Campaign includes three television PSAs: 60-Second "Overview", 30-Second "Ciguatera", and 30-Second "Dengue". This public service advertisement campaign was created to educate U.S. Virgin Islands residents about the linkages between climate change and health. It alerts the population of the possibilities of increased outbreaks of ciguatera (fish poisoning) and dengue fever which may occur as a result of the climate changes. The Climate and Health media campaign was presented by the University of the Virgin Islands Caribbean Exploratory Research Center, funded by a grant from the National Institutes of Health (NIH) and the National Institute on Minority Health and Health Disparities in collaboration with the University of the Virgin Islands, and was produced by Digital Media Solutions in the U.S. Virgin Islands. Additional footage provided by PAHO Archives (Pan American Health Organization) and the Virgin Islands Public Television System WTJX Channel 12.
